Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This September I will be starting my 10th year of teaching and welcoming an awesome class! I will be teaching 2nd grade in an E.S.O.L friendly classroom. My students live in a high poverty, high crime and low income urban area.

Despite the many negative factors surrounding my students they come to school ready and excited to learn and grow.

Sadly, we are not able to provide extra supplies to our students and it is often a financial burden to our families, one that I try to ease as much as possible.

My Project

On the first day of school every year I provide my students with a list of supplies they will need in our classroom. As a parent myself, I know how daunting this can be, especially when you have very little money. Most of my students come to school with nothing in their book bags. I would like to take the stress of getting all of the supplies right away from my students and their parents.

All of your generous donations will be put to good use!

The binders will be used to help my students keep track of any materials I use to differentiate or supplement our new reading and math series. The use of dry erase markers, is a daily activity in my classroom, especially during math and whole group instruction. The whiteboards allow me to quickly assess what the students are doing. This also means our markers run out quickly! We will use the glue sticks and crayons when we work in our interactive notebooks, especially in grammar and vocabulary. Interactive notebooks are a fun and engaging way to takes notes and it allows students to refer back to any concepts that have been taught in class. Last, but not least, pencils and a heavy duty sharpener is crucial for any classroom. I want my students to know that losing a pencil is not the end of the world. By knowing that I will always have a pencil to provide, I believe it will relieve some of the anxiety they might feel.
