Our foreign language collection needs updating as our school gains more students who speak languages other than English. Many of these students are already bilingual, but several come to Michigan knowing only a few English words. I would like to provide a wider variety of books for my students to browse to either learn how to say words in different languages, but also to provide a tool for my foreign language friends who have been dropped into an English-only pond that is American schooling.
Every week, more and more students are requesting our foreign language section.
I want to be able to show them that they can learn more than just Spanish or French. While those are great and learning any additional language is beneficial, I would like to provide books that will directly benefit our newly immigrated students. Not only can they check out these books, but other students in their classes can check out these books to try to communicate better with them in their native language.
