My Students

My students are 11 and 12th special education students in a Title 1 school and they work hard to meet their IEP goals and state standards in English and a variety of other challenges as we prepare for them to transition into life after high school. My students struggle with reading, writing and public speaking due to a variety of learning and emotional disabilities. The majority of my students are reading at a 3rd-4th grade level.

I have found that my students benefit from a variety of different avenues to highlight their academic progress and emphasize their unique gifts.

In the past I have seen incredible results with the use of technology in the classroom. Many of my students do not have access to home computers, laptops, video equipment at home and their only opportunities to explore these important tools of this generation is at school. Often these technologies support students who are struggling with specific disabilities so that they can meet the rigorous standards of the classroom and other times they are offered a glimpse into interests and talents they didn't know they had.

My Project

My students will be using their camera in a variety of ways to enhance their projects in English class. As my 12th graders work on their senior project they will be using the camera to document their experiences while in their apprenticeships and other learning opportunities and record practice presentations to prepare for their final presentations in front of a board. They will be able to watch themselves and their peers after recording their speeches to review and critique their public speaking skills. This will be a huge support in helping them meet this great challenge. My 12th graders will also be using it to make mock job interviews. My students will be role playing employer and employee as they prepare to transition to the job market. Preparing for the job application and interview is a huge part of our transition plan for the students with special needs. The 11th graders will be working on a smaller scale presentations throughout the year including, research project presentations, formal readings of their own written narratives, essays and poetry.

The camera will provide an avenue for students to see their strengths and build upon them, as well as, critique and work on areas of weakness.

The camera will create a since of formality within each practice run, with multiple recordings, they will become less and less mortified of public speaking and begin to be able to get past emotional blocks in order to practice key skills and presentation styles. The recordings will allow students to reflect and review presentations in a much deeper way than before. I look forward to seeing their progress this year and the excitement that will come with using a digital camera.
