My Students

How would you like to be the forgotten ones?? That is what happened to our first graders. Our school district and our school concentrates on 2nd grade and above. Therefore, our first grade classes are left with old IBM computers with limited features while the rest have received new computers!

We are located in metropolitan CA.

My students are mostly composed of Hispanics and African American students from low income families and receives free lunch. Our school is a low performing school, but have continued to make progress. Often many of our children don't have parents' support at home and some are not able to help their child with their learning.

My Project

This year, our school purchased an online reading program that is aimed to help our students to improve their reading skills. Due to the limited new computers we have at school, all the first grade classrooms were given the old computers. These computers are more than 8 years old and don't have the microphone component. The new online program will have the ability to record the student's reading and playback for them as well as allowing the teacher to assess their reading so I may provide additional support. Usually, I test students' oral reading one by one and it takes too much time. Therefore, the microphones will allow my students and other first grade students to record their reading on the computer more frequently and therefore it will help build their fluency. I can't wait for them to hear their reading and be motivated to practice and eventually to become an independent fluent reader at the end of first grade.

The microphone headset may not appear to be an important tool, but it will be a tool that will allow my students and hopefully all of the first grade students to have the opportunity to hear themselves read out loud.

That it will motivate them to want to do more, to do better, and to shine when they hear good reading which is actually themselves! That is important!
