This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a school in Hialeah, Florida, and my school receives Title I funding because over 90% of our students are on free or reduced lunch, and our community is made up of low-income families; however, don't feel sorry for me or my students because although our pockets may not be full, our hearts certainly are. We are a loving family, but every family needs a little help sometimes.

My students are eager and hungry to read stories that are relatable, and that may lead to thought provoking discussions and analysis.

To that end, there are novels that would truly help facilitate the 2020-2021 school year for myself and my students. You could make a great difference in the educational lives of my pupils by donating to my project!

My Project

During the school year, students read short stories and poems that are part of an overall collection assigned by the district and while this is fine, there is no greater feeling than reading a coming-of-age story, in the form of a novel for my middle school students.

Novels are a great way to incorporate units of study that really go across the curriculum and examine and discuss themes such as: peer pressure, identity, love, prejudice, survival, courage and heroism and even death.

Books really expand one's mind and can challenge the way we think and behave. Most of all, books remind us that we are not alone and this is critical to all readers, but especially our adolescent population.
