My Project

This year I am working with a diverse group of energetic Kindergarteners in need of interactive and engaging modes of literacy practice. They came from many different backgrounds and experiences and have meshed into a wonderful working unit who daily build our recognition of letters, their sounds, and how to encode and decode. To do this well, more than paper and pencils is required. Small group practice for all is essential and when I am in these groups the remaining 4 and 5 year olds require high interest activities that are of quality to keep them engaged and moving forward as learners.

Through this project I hope to provide my students with a group of activities that allow them to practice forming upper and lowercase letters and to segment sounds as we build their phonemic awareness skills.

These tools include magnetic letter trays to practice matching three dimensional magnets to their two dimensional print form as well as progressing to matching magnetic letters to pictures with that letter as its first sound, segmenting trays for practicing phonemic awareness, reading rods for independently building two and three letter words, and a magnetic writing grid poster page that allows for modeling writing.
