My Students

Many of my students experience extreme poverty. Many have difficulty coming to school for complex reasons often out of the child's control. I serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and various learning disabilities.

The typical students in my class struggle with basic math and reading skills.

This year, I had over a third of my class receiving special services. I have 30 fourth graders, and 12 of these students needed additional support services. Because my students have complex and difficult lives, I need to provide emotional and physical comfort and support to help them learn and grow. Six hours a day is long when a young person is struggling with overwhelming problems.

I love these students. I love the fact I am the rock in their lives. I am here for them when so much in their lives are in transition and turmoil. When these students are given love, empathy, and structure, they grow. It is their growth that gives me the hope to face the world every day.

My Project

I am creating a self-reflection, time-out, personal safe space for my 4th graders.

This year has been stressful and filled with uncertainty, this will be a place where the students can watch my tranquil fish tank, draw, and write in their journals.

They can sit, catch their breath, and collect their thoughts.

Sometimes we all need a moment to quietly color and to doodle. Students are immediately drawn to color, and if I give them pretty pens, pencils, markers, they will use them. They can use skills to give hand-drawn gifts to friends, family, and others. With the stressful year ahead, I want to give my students some space and tools for a bit of peace and beauty.
