My Students

"Tell me, I forget; Show me, I remember; Involve me, I understand"-Carl Orff This quote describes my philosophy of music education perfectly. I believe that children learn best by doing and classroom instruments like xylophones help children to experience music in a very hands-on way.

I am a music teacher in an elementary school that is located in a very high poverty area.

The majority of my students live in the public housing projects located across the street from the school. Due to the nature of their home lives, my students often come to school with issues that affect their demeanor and behavior. Regardless of these challenges, I expect great things from my children and they never disappoint me. I am lucky in that most of them enjoy music and I strive to make my class as hands-on as possible.

My Project

Due to overcrowding, I do not have my own classroom and instead go from room to room on a cart. I love my students and even with these challenges I try to maintain a music program that consists of more than just listening to music and coloring pictures. My cart is piled high with various instruments such as maracas, drums, triangles, rhythm sticks and we use them on a daily basis. I do not let the lack of a classroom stop me from doing things with my students, so to that end I have decided that it is about time they have some exposure to true Orff instruments. Orff xylophones are great because they allow students to increase their music literacy skills in a fun way, and they feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of a lesson. I am excited at the prospect of opening up this new avenue of learning to my elementary students.

By making a donation to this project you will be helping my students experience a whole new way to make music.

We will be able to use our new xylophones to create and play musical compositions that have more depth and layers than before. I am excited for my students to have some of the same opportunities for making music that students in more affluent areas already have.
