I am a kindergarten special education teacher in an inner city pre-school which services predominately pre-school and kindergarten special education students. My class is self contained with six students who are all diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Most of my students are non-verbal or extremely limited in their verbal skills. My students, in addition to their struggles with language, also have difficulty with following directions, focusing and attention. The one time I have their full and undivided attention is when they are listening to a book on tape. I have been going to my local library weekly to borrow books on tape, but they have a limited amount of books, especially for the type of books and grade level that my students need. For my project, I am requesting two sets of favorite picture book read alongs. These sets each contain four copies of five different titles, along with a CD that narrates the story. Some of the titles include traditional favorites such as "Stone Soup", "Madeline", "Caps for Sale", and "Five Little Monkeys". These sets will allow my students to listen to the story independently while following along in the book. I have also requested a CD player. I have the headphones and junction box that is necessary to have multiple students listen to the CD at the same time, but I don't have the CD player! I would love my students to develop their love of reading by giving them the ability to sit by themselves and listen to and follow a book on a CD. It would teach them to focus, to follow printed word, to listen to the "beep" to turn the page, and provide them with new experiences through literature which they otherwise might not have! Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my request and for considering to help my students. I know that if this request is granted, my students will enjoy endless hours of listening and reading to their favorite books.
