Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In my second grade special education classroom, transitioning from activity to activity can be a particularly difficult time. Some students finish very quickly, others work slowly, and many have trouble understanding how much time is left for a project or how much time there is to clean up. The stress of transitioning can lead to frustration and emotional outbursts, all of which disrupts learning. We currently operate with a small digital timer that is not big enough for the students to see. Many of my students do not grasp the concept of "5 minutes left!" or "1 minute to clean up!" and need visual reinforcement. I would love to get two timers to address my special-needs population: one that will show the digital time, and one that will give visual/analog support as to the passage of time (proven particularly effective for children with autism). By giving them concrete evidence of time remaining, supported by sounds, changing colors, and movement, you'll be giving my students tools for them to learn how to manage their own behavior, and in turn, make their classroom environment a more peaceful, productive place.
