My Students

My school is a consolidated school district that covers small, rural communities, and quiet farms. Some of my students travel long distances to school; others live right down the street.

My students are inquisitive scholars.

In a small school, students have the opportunity to try new skills without tremendous pressure. They multitask. They have big hearts and want to help others. They like to try new things.

My students are quixotic. They want to understand and influence the world around them, while at the same time staying close to home and the surroundings that make sense to them.

My Project

This semester my speech and drama students embarked on a broadcasting adventure. They are writing, filming, and producing a daily newscast for our district. They are learning about reporting the news, scripting, filming, and production. We do all of this with an inexpensive webcam and microphone, but they are very limiting.

We want to upgrade our camera and studio setting with a new webcam and a green screen that lets us film with a variety of backdrops.

The new webcam has zoom features that will allow students to experiment with filming, and the green screen will let us introduce a variety of new skills. Having a better microphone and a stand for our webcam will also allow for greater exploration and learning.
