The students in my class are sixth, seventh and eighth graders who attend a public middle school in a large, urban school district. The students come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and the majority of the students are from low-income households.
The students have all been identified as having special learning needs such as auditory processing deficits and attention deficits, which can make it difficult for them to find success in a traditional classroom setting.
In other ways, they are like all students. They are funny, insightful, smart, and interested. They always rise above expectations when given enough time and support.
My Project
Some of the best lessons in my class are when we are engaged in design and engineering challenges. My students love how open-ended the assignments are and they love getting to build and collaborate. I love seeing my students tap into their creativity and problem-solving.
My students need supplies to keep our maker space well stocked.
I want them to have the right materials, whether we are building a bridge, a rocket or a better mousetrap. The pipe cleaners, rulers, craft sticks, tape and tape dispensers will ensure there is no limit to my students creativity and their ability to bring their ideas to fruition. We also need a book with more STEM task ideas so we can have fresh challenges to attack.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
