My Students

My class is very determined. Every day we split up into small groups for instruction. This allows for students to work in a small group at levels where they can excel. Reading is a critical topic for my students. They enjoy reading, but we have ran out of resources that are interesting to them.

My students are placed in a 12:1:1 classroom and are labeled as Emotionally Disturbed.

They are bright students with great futures ahead of them. We are located in a low-income are and almost all of the students come from low-income families. Finding resources and the money to fund for books has become a set back for our students. My students love to read but do not have even books that are interesting to them and that are on level for them. Most of our class books are out dated and way to hard for my students to comprehend. We need books that can help grow their learning minds. We also do not have enough copies of books for each student. Our lack in books makes children uninterested. I am always making copy of picture books in black and white and they just don't interest the students as much as a colored book.

My Project

Each week my students are given a story to read. Throughout the week they are engaging in these stories and learning concepts such as, main idea, cause and effect, sequencing, and point of view. They are developing these concepts that will benefit their knowledge. I would love to continue building these concepts by using books that are more interesting to them and are a bit more challenging. I want them to feel confident in their reading. Getting new books would be exciting for my students. They would enjoy the chapter books that I have chosen for them. My students are second graders and may not be taking the New York State tests this year, but they will need to be prepared for next year. These books are just another step to help them build their knowledge.

These donations will improve our classroom because it allows students to grow confidence in their reading.

They are building basic concept skills. They will be able to improve their reading fluency, literacy, and comprehension. These new books will motivate and push students to their goals.
