My Project

Reading provides an escape to different worlds, filled with characters who become our close friends, where together, we embark on adventures we never thought possible. As a new-ish teacher (2nd year) who works at a Title I school, newly released books are not readily available to all students. While many are fortunate to have access to books at their homes, the truth is that too many of them do not. For many, the books they read in class will be only books they read all year. My hope is that if I can provide books that are exciting, relevant, and thought-provoking, that many of my students will find a love for reading and learning, and maybe with time, they might become lifelong readers.

The books I chose are both culturally relevant and include relatable characters with flaws and real-life problems.

My goal is to allow students to choose from the books donated and be able to read in small groups with peers who have chosen the same book. While this may be more time-consuming for me as the teacher, I want my students to dive into the world of books because I truly believe that reading is a skill to be learned and a necessary one for growth as a human being. Education is my life and without books, the world becomes a little more dull.

My students are bright and ready to learn from their peers, from me, and from the world. They are incredibly outspoken and ready to voice their opinions on topics, even adults would shy away from. I admire their tenacity, their willingness to work hard, and the growth mindset we have all been working on this year! We appreciate any and all of your help this year!
