My Students

Teaching in the extremely diverse and picturesque neighborhood of Ditmas Park, Brooklyn is a rewarding experience. My classroom is full of eager and excited learners from all over the world who teach me new things every day. These children love coming to school where they grow as readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists. Our school offers some amazing music and art programs through which our students learn to express themselves in different ways. They take pride in their work and enjoy sharing it with each other and with their families. Many of our wonderful families join us in our classrooms to engage in our learning as often as possible.

The advantages to being part of such a unique and richly diverse school community also come with countless hardships that we strive to overcome together every day.

Many of our students are living in poverty and we have high populations of students with disabilities and English Language Learners. Even with a love for learning, many of our students are reading far below grade level, which often carries over to struggles in writing and math as well. I want to give my students every possible resource to help them reach their potential.

My Project

These six tablets will enhance independent reading in my classroom by keeping student engagement high with access to countless e-books. More than half of the students in my classroom are English Language Learners and more than 2/3 of my students are reading 1-2 full grade levels below benchmark.

My classroom library is a third grade library and we simply do not have enough books at the "just right" levels that my incoming students need to read in order grow as readers.

I have done my best to gather more traditional books to meet their needs but children tend to read through lower-leveled books very quickly. Even the most eager reader will get bored and disengaged in reading if they are forced to reread the same books over and over again because there are not enough books to fill their book baggies with. Research shows that in order to grow as a reader and move up to the next reading level rather than regress, children need to read for a minimum of 60 minutes every day.

My goal is to give each student a designated "E-Book" day so that every child has a full period of unlimited book choices every week during Reading Workshop. My English Language Learners can use interactive online games and listen to E-books in order to enhance their language skills and vocabulary. These tablets will also give me unlimited book choices to use for Guided Reading and other small group instruction. I also plan to find ways to incorporate these tablets as an academic intervention tool for my students who are struggling in math. Group projects in Social Studies can flourish if each group has a tablet for research and exploration. The possibilities for growth and learning with these tablets are truly unlimited!
