I am the teacher of a gifted and talented first grade class at a school in New York City. I have 24 children with extremely diverse needs, from children who are able to read at a 4th grade level to children who are reading at a kindergarten level. However, they are all amazing thinkers with lots of ideas to share all the time.

My class is brand new in the school this year, so materials were already hard to come by when I was setting up the classroom in the summer. I have spent so much money so far to give my students all the best that I can provide. There are still many things that I still would love to have in the classroom to give my students great enrichment experiences. Though a lot of my children are reading above grade level, almost all of them need to build up their fluency. Even if they are able to read the words on the pages of those 4th grade books, they don't have the voice expression and excitement to help them have a better understanding of the stories. We have spent a lot of time trying to "read like storytellers," trying to make our voices sound exciting and animated. I read books aloud everyday to show the children how they can do this. However, I think a listening center in which children have an opportunity to listen to books on CD and read along with the storyteller would really help them out!

Constant exposure to smooth and exciting, storyteller voices will help my children to achieve the same in their own reading. With a listening center added to our classroom, my children will have so many more opportunities to hear a reading voice that can be a model of fluency. My students need Read-Along Kits which include books on CD to hear great fluency. The kits also include sets of books so four children at a time can read along with the CD's. The books I am asking for vary by genre and level so that there are some that will match the individual needs of each child in my class. Bouncy Mouse and Rachel Fister's Blister will be perfect for my students who are still focusing on developing their phonics and phonemic awareness skills. Sharks and Wolves will help my students when we are focusing on our non-fiction unit. A Fine, Fine School, The Snow Walker, The Perfect Family, The Stray Dog, Sheila Rae, the Brave and Rotten Ralph Helps Out are books with CDs that will challenge my higher level readers. They will also allow my students who are still working on phonics skills to read books they wouldn't ordinarily be able to read on their own.

With your help, my students will be able to develop their fluency and become smooth and enthusiastic readers! The books on CD will provide an example of a storyteller's voice that they will be able to try out as well. My students will be so excited to have a fun new Learning Center in our classroom!
