Benjamin Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Students need to be involved in their learning so that they can take ownership of what they are doing. Students need to get their hands "dirty" by using them to research, create, and make learning meaningful. I teach about 18 eager, energetic third-grade students in my classroom this year. We are a Title I school which means 100% of our students participate in the free lunch program. All of our students are eager to learn and need experiences that they do not get at home. Many of our children come from single-parent homes.
Our school is in close proximity to a major military base; we serve many students who come from active and retired military families.
I also help run the Entrepreneurial Club at our school. Students are tasked with planning, designing, and creating items to sell at school functions. Our students have made many items such as t-shirts, personalized bears, stickers, and decals. Our club uses the "profits" to help with school beautification projects. They are so proud to take ownership of their club growth!
My Project
My students are in need of various new chapter books and graphic novels.
My students have researched and selected books they would like to take home to read with their family.
Many of my students have younger siblings at home and want to share their favorite book series with them. This will encourage family engagement and parent involvement.
By having more books to take home, my students will find new topics and series they enjoy. Parents will be able to sit, read and spend time with their child each night. Parents will see their child's reading skills grow as they journey from one series to the next.
