Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students have limited background knowledge on our units of study. In addition to that challenge, there are not enough books to help them increase that knowledge.

I service 60 students from two classes.

Most of them receive free or reduced lunch, a common indicator of poverty. That said, this does not impact their ability or eagerness to learn. They are always interested in learning about new things and get excited by books. They would be extremely grateful, as would I, to have these resources for our classroom!

My Project

When we work on reading and writing units, it helps to have mentor texts. Through these texts, I can build the background knowledge, which enhances the students learning. The books in my classroom that focus on these units of study are extremely limited or nonexistent. Having such a broad selection of titles would make our units more enjoyable and the learning that much easier. One of the units of study that these books will help bring to life are Latin America: Incas, Aztecs and Mayans. We will be studying these ancient civilizations during SS and Readers Workshop. We will also be studying Ecosystems in our Reading Workshop, Writers Workshop and Science units of study. Having these books will help the students build their knowledge about the subject area. They are vibrant and exciting resources for our classroom and will help the students do research projects and oral presentations.

This project is so important to myself and my students because it will enable them to build their knowledge.

This knowledge can then be carried forward and used to better understand what I will be teaching them.
