My Students

Our school serves students in grades 4-8. 93% of the students are economically disadvantage. We are the home to 73% English Language Learners. We have an influx of newcomers this year due to war torn countries.

My classroom consists of students who have all been in the country for less than 18 months.

Many of the students have limited prior knowledge and/or experiences. Each day they come to school with smiles all across their faces all ready and eager to learn.

My Project

I am requesting leveled readers for my class. The students are new to the country so they are all emergent readers. These books will be given to students during small group instruction. Students will be able to read at their instructional level.

The leveled books will be used to teach the necessary comprehension and accuracy strategies that the students need.

Students will be able to take these books home in their book bags and practice reading daily. This will help students move from Learning to Read to Reading to Learn. Not only will their learning enhance but their love for reading will soar.
