My Project

I teach high school environmental science. My students are primarily 11th and 12th graders, and for most of them, this is the last science class they take before graduating from high school. Besides meeting certain science standards, my main goal for this class is to encourage adult thinking skills and the development of conviction based on actual science.

I find that teenagers are so strongly influenced by fast-changing trends and that leaves them not really knowing what they personally think about many "hot" topics.

I also find that the teenagers I teach, many of whom come from generational poverty, operate very much in survival mode and don't know how to make decisions that are environmentally-sound. Lastly, I find that teenagers don't want to listen to adults going on and on about the perils of our environment; they'd rather hear about things in terms of solutions they can actually be a part of or hear from people they can relate to.

I don't believe that I can appropriately teach environmental science without talking about what's currently happening in society, in our country, in our world, and even in our own backyards. To know about these "happenings," students have to be seekers of news and current events, and they have to have an interest in reading informational text. I am hoping that by introducing them to these texts that are adapted from other books to appeal more directly to young people, I can rope them into being on the side of environmental solutions rather than problems.
