I am a third grade teacher at PS 251 in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Our school is a Title 1 school with over 80% of the population receiving free lunch. My room is wonderful. I have desks and chairs, some working computers, and many different centers where children can work independently, if they wish. When it comes to reading as a group, though, I have a problem: I have no rug. The NYC school system requires that the children sit on a rug for the beginning of their reading workshop. I had a rug two years ago, but it had to be discarded because of an insect issue. This past year I had no rug because I couldn't afford one. What I am hoping for is a new bright and colorful rug with actual bordered spaces for each child. I feel that the children will benefit from the ownership of their own sitting area and that will automatically make their reading experience more comfortable and full of enrichment. My behavior management will be much easier with a rug on which each child has their own spot. The cost of this rug is great but I truly believe that children thrive on having a "spot to call their own." Please help me make this a reality so that my students can feel welcome and comfortable during their library sessions.
