Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In January, I became the teacher of a first grade class, midyear. The school is located near the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. This kindergarten through fifth grade school has over 1400 students and few extra dollars for the fun activities children need to be able to be fully engage in their learning; particularly at this time of the year. My class has a range of learners. Some of my students have never previously attended school, and the majority of those who never attended have only recently been exposed to literature. Additionally, because this is their first experience in school, I have a few children who seem to display some true difficulties grasping language and reading skills, but have yet to be evaluated to receive the services they need. In the time they are in my class, I would love to be able to offer some rich literacy experiences to all of my students, especially for my struggling readers. With books on tape, children can read and listen to real literature without embarrassment or the shame of not knowing how to read. Through using books and their words on tape, all students would be able to have the same access to literature, in their own time.
