Reading the "just right" books! I'm a second grade teacher and I have 25 students in my class. Our school is in a high poverty area. We have students, who attend the school, that live in the shelter not too far away. It is a big school and many of our students speak different languages at home. Many of the parents have to work to make ends meet, therefore they don't get a chance to work with their children at home. And some of them do not get a chance to go to the library to select books.
They say that all children are different and that they learn differently. That is no exception in my classroom. Each of my student is reading on a different level. And their reading levels ranges from level B to level N. Some of my students are reading beginners or easy level books and some of my students are reading chapter books. We have enough chapter books for the students who are reading at that level, but these books are not the appropriate levels for the struggling readers. In order for the students to move up in their reading levels, they have to read "just the right" books. Except that they can't do this because my classroom library does not have enough "just right" books for them. Most of the books, that I have, are too challenging, especially for the lower level readers. The children need to be exposed to a lot of literature so that they can read. My students have difficulty reading books that are challenging for them. Also, the students have been reading the same books at least twice already and they are bored of it. My students love to go "book shopping" each week, but they have been reading the same books from the beginning of the school year.
My library needs a variety of books. I picked out books that are appropriate for the reading levels in my classroom. I selected books that are beginning-to-read or easy readers for those struggling readers. It is beneficial for the students to read more books, which will in turn increase their reading levels. I need the students to move up at least 4 reading levels by the end of the school year. They will also have more selections of books in the library to choose from, when they go "book shopping" each week. When I get these books, the children will have more books to choose from and they will be reading at their appropriate reading levels. For those students, who do not go to the library with their parents, they will be allowed to take these books home and read with their parents. For those children who do not have access to the library, they shouldn't be penalized. According to Dick Allington, if children are to succeed academically, they need to read at home with books that are on their reading levels.
