Reading Takes You to Places Without Moving Your Feet

Help me give my students the novel Refugee, written by Alan Gratz and materials for our Writer's Workshop, so that each child may be successful in completing reading and writing assignments, and be prepared for group discussions.

My Students

My students are sociable, energetic, and intelligent kids who many struggle with reading. They are a multicultural group of students who enjoy learning, participating in class discussions, and sharing their ideas. They bring to the classroom environment their cultural knowledge, ideas, stories, and experiences that enrich the educational experience for the whole class.

"Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are" - Mason Cooley.

This school year will look different for my students. They will experience hybrid learning where they are learning remotely via Zoom videoconferencing and email on some days, and then return to the classroom in their school building live with their classmates and teachers on other days. Because of this variation on where their learning will take place, I want to give my students reading experiences that are engaging and relevant with a printed text, and materials for them to be productive in class where students will be writing about their reading and learning experiences.

My Project

The books that I am requesting will allow students to have their own copy of the text. I selected engaging and relevant novels that reflect on issues that our country is experiencing today in regards to injustice and cruelty versus empathy and social responsibility. Refugee by Alan Gratz is a novel about three different children who seek refuge because of discrimination, violence and destruction in their countries. Ghost Boys, written by Jewell Park Rhodes, is about the unrest and devastation of a community after a killing of a boy.

The donations to this project will help to improve students understanding of a government's societal responsibility, and the duty it has to act in the best interests of its people, the environment, and society as a whole.

Students will make connections from their reading as they read stories around historical events that involved prejudices, segregation, discrimination, and governments that failed to protect human rights. Students will engage in classroom discussions for their voice and perspective on present day circumstances with the Black Lives Matters movement, and reflect on the experiences of the characters in the reading.

I have requested a whiteboard easel stand, self-stick chart paper, and post it notes for the ease of lesson presentations and for students to present their works.
