My Students

My students are the best! Our school serves zoned students in a high-need, low socio-economic, full-of-love neighborhood. Many attend local after-school programs and during the school year, spend most of their reading lives in the classroom. The majority of my students are reading one to two years below-level. This hinders their reading and math performance levels.

Seventy-five percent of my class is reading below grade level, with the majority reading more than one grade below-level.

In spite of this, my students remain excited about reading, and enjoy choosing their own books during reader's workshop. They enjoy reading and often react positively (and loudly) when they enjoy a text.

In order to encourage "wide reading," they need access to a broad choice of quality literature, on their independent reading levels.

My Project

My students will enjoy the variety of fiction and informational texts. They will build comprehension and fluency through reading and rereading texts that they select. They will build schema and increase their knowledge of an author's craft as they explore the commonalities within the genres they read.

Additionally, they will gain self-confidence as their reading abilities / levels improve.

That will then crossover into their writerly lives. The benefits are multi-faceted, and are immediate! While I read aloud to my students every day, nothing can replace access to a variety of texts at their independent reading levels.

Quality books can help my students enjoy reading while gaining new experiences.
