Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Facing adversity should not be typical for 8-year-olds. My students arrive at school each day eager to learn despite those obstacles. They attend a Title I school in Bushwick, Brooklyn right across the street from low-income housing projects. The majority of our students come from low-income families, single-parent households with English as their second language.

In my integrated co-teaching classroom, our beautiful-minded students need a common area for collaborative learning.

They would benefit so much by having more supplemental activities to engage their learning in the Literary Lounge. They enjoy learning new things from group or individual reading time. They get so excited picking out books, engaging in conversations about character types and story plots, and showing their parents how they are improving!

Watching the students show enthusiasm for reading as they jump reading levels is amazing!

My Project

Today my students enter a building that has outdated furniture. The desks are over twenty years old and some of the chairs are over thirty years old. Receiving the area rug and chairs will give my students an area where they can feel comfortable and free to engage in reading activities.

Opening a book is like opening up doors across the world.

Books allow students to learn about different places and things they may not come across in their day to day activities. These supplies will allow the students to converse with one another in a central location.

In addition, students will be able to receive lessons while sitting comfortably on a new rug, opposed to old desk and chairs. The rug will also supply a place for students to peer share their writing as well as engage in shared and guided reading with the teacher. Lastly, the floor chairs will add an inviting space where students can quietly relax and complete their classwork.

The supplies will serve as a safe space for our students. A place where learning can be relaxing and fun.
