This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Reading is the foundation for everything! Kindergarteners and first graders are beginning to read. Second and third-graders are starting to fill in some of the reading gaps. My K-3 students are wonderful, and I am filled with joy as I teach them different reading skills and strategies. The laminating pouches will be useful for sight words that will be taught in class and then practiced at home. We use whiteboards and dry-erase markers daily either for first sound warmups, practicing words, or ending with review. However, not all students learn by writing and repeating.

When students play, they don't realize they are learning.

This is where the reading games come in. The CVC Word Game will help many students read words with short vowel sounds. Sight Word competitions are always exciting. It is fun to see who ends up with the most cards. Rolling large dice to create new words brings reading to a whole new level and is a great way to end a lesson. The ultimate learn-and-play activity is using Play-Dough! Imagine having students shape the letter of the first sound in a word or spelling out sight words. These words aren't always decodable, so finding a fun way to learn them and using a kinesthetic method can be very helpful.

My students work so hard and want to be successful readers. I want them to enjoy reading and become better each day. Learning to read should be fun and these materials will definitely help.
