My Students

In today's world, reading is a skill students struggle to find a purpose for. While as adults we know this is still an important skill, students would rather be listening to music, playing on the computer, or playing video games. With the right books and tools, students can still enjoy reading.

My students are third and fourth graders in a small school in Kentucky.

They mostly come from low income families and have little academic enrichment in their lives. When we are reading, the students struggle with fluency and comprehension. Books are not something that is present in many of the households and reading is not always encouraged by parents. In order to truly develop a love of reading with these students we need a variety of materials to help develop reading skills.

My Project

By funding this project you will provide resources for my students to experience a variety of literature in a fun and supportive way. These will allow my students to learn reading fluency and comprehension through real literature. The Bluford Bundle of books will provide books on my students' levels that interest them and relate to today's world. The CDs of various chapter books like Because of Winn Dixie will provide fluent reading examples from stories the kids are interested in and can read along with. The student and teacher guides will provide comprehension activities and practice to help my students improve their reading skills.

Please help my students by providing meaningful literature and literature supplements for my classroom.

These books, CDs, student guides, and teacher guides will change the way my students experience and understand literature. By helping with this project you will be helping turn my reluctant readers into thriving life-long readers.
