Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I happily began my ninth year of teaching 3rd grade this past August. What a loving, energetic, eager group of young people. Each year, I come back ready and invigorated to hit the ground running, as these children never disappoint me and they are always willing to begin the year on a positive note. I am also very lucky to have a fair amount of parental involvement and support. Each year, I prepare to receive a classroom full of third grade boys who I know will spend all their spare time (when their not reading - wink, wink) drawing. That once was the case…until I discovered the power of the comic book genre! Oh, they still draw – a little, but now they’ve become avid readers. I can’t stock my comic caddy fast enough! This art/reading format has been an incredibly easy way to get my boys to read, and read often. According to numerous reports I’ve read over my teaching career, boys at this age are harder to engage in reading than girls. Well, that is certainly not the case in my classroom anymore. I no longer have to beg, cajole, or bribe my boys to read. This eagerness has transformed many of my non-readers (boys and girls) into fairly fluent on-grade or nearly on-grade readers! In our library, we have collected everything from Archie (Betty, Veronica for the girls), X-Men, Captain Underpants, Spiderman, The Hulk, to a Shakespeare series I stumbled upon over the summer. Kids from other classes frequent my room to borrow comics! I don't even worry about whether or not they'll return them! They always do...they want to be able to come back and borrow again. Also, to my amazement and joy, a student I had in third grade two years ago had one of his younger brothers (still attending our school) deliver/donate 10 comics to my classroom this past October! I must in all honesty give partial credit to the increase in reading achievement in my classroom to comic books. I never though I'd say that. I also never thought I'd have comics in my "High Interest" reading library either! Last month, my children we’re so intrigued by the story of Romeo and Juliet, during our read aloud time, that reading parts of the comic (of course showing the incredible art work) segued into reading parts of a book in a series called Shakespeare for Kids. To further fuel their curiosity we had a viewing the 1970's movie version of this classic love story and tragedy. The accent was difficult for them to follow, but they managed - THEY KNEW THE STORY! Two days later, after recess, I ushered my kids to their seats without saying much of anything and began a showing the more modern-day version – West Side Story. Children couldn’t contain themselves, as they began to identify comparable characters from each story. I noticed a lot of partner chatting, pointing in recognition and mouths opening in astonishment. They were actively comparing and contrasting the differing time periods, clothing, settings, nationalities, etc. The feeling of excitement, wonderment and accomplishment were palpable. Later, during reading groups, I handed out copies of the original script. The children could not stop reading their favorite scenes – over and over and again! As I observed and listened to the groups interacting, I heard exhaustive discussions re: the similarities, disagreements about characters' motivations and reactions to other characters. Everything I'd taught was right there in front of me! In keeping with strict NCLB guidelines and state curriculum standards, we’ve been able to continue to explore, discuss and practice reading strategies such as compare and contrast (movie version to book, movie to movie); retelling, sequencing, summarizing, making text-to-text / text-to-self / text-to-world connections…and their favorite – noticing and noting character traits and physical appearance. For the latter each student selected their favorite character from the story and/or movies, sketched them, and drew a line of symmetry. On one side of the character they listed the character traits, and on the other they noted the physical appearance. In addition, some took on the (optional) task of creating dioramas of their favorite scenes (usually the balcony). The children have also started writing alternative endings to both versions. Interestingly enough, after a mini lesson and some discussion surrounding conflict resolution, they believed that the stories should have had less tragic outcomes. Given their enthusiasm, I could not pass up a chance to reward their hard work with a live performance of what started it all – Romeo and Juliet. Yes, we’re going to the theatre the end of March! To say that my kids are excited is an understatement. My reward has been the ability to encourage, enthrall, and turn kids on to the wonders of the world of reading - past and present - whatever the tool, and having them make lasting connections that will serve them in the future. These experiences have been so very enriching, entertaining and educational. I would therefore, ask that you help me give my kids something that will further their interest(s) and curiosity. I am requesting copies of the Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare Can Be Fun Series) and the "paperback" comic, Manga Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet. It would be wonderful for all of my 23 children to own their very own copy of both. These items would not only be a gift, but a small investment in the lives of children who have so little materially, but have so very much in spirit and perseverance! And what a way to end the third grade!
