Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are mostly from a very low socio-economic area of our city. They are predominantly Hispanic, although there are other ethnicities represented as well. My class is a wonderful mix of street-smart and tender, brash and empathetic, and tough yet vulnerable. Life has not been kind to many of them, yet they show kindness to one another. Life is difficult, but they are chin-up, shoulders-back ready to meet any challenge. These kids are engaged and engaging. I love them!

My Project

These books will be used during our ELA period to help leveled-reader students understand how people of all ages deal with difficult relationships and circumstances. We will go deep with this novel, discussing it in a whole-class setting as well as participating in activities based on the reading throughout the quarter. A culminating project based on problem-solving will be our final activity. Lessons will include vocabulary, think-aloud, role-playing, small group discussions, and more. Many of my students are from broken or non-traditional homes and will relate well to the difficulties the protagonist faces in this engaging and insightful story.
