Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our typical day begins with Drop Everything And Read which is a time where students are engaged in guided reading and learn skills that will boost their reading comprehension skills and fluency. My biggest challenge is getting my auditory learners to read with fluency and comprehend the material.

My students come from a diverse background and they live in either the housing projects located around the school or in shelters.

Many of my students are below grade level in reading, writing and various other subjects. 9 out of the 19 students that I teach have Individual Education Plans (IEP) and receive outside assistance to help them reach their learning goals. Some of the students have behavioral issues that prevent them from learning. Many of my students have a desire to go further in their education and reach their academic goals but lack the proper tools and skills to get there. We have a small school community of less than 300 students. Our library is outdated and we currently don't have a librarian, therefore we walk our students to the community library once a month is the weather permits. The staff is great and we do our best to work towards helping our students reach their academic and social goals. We have a warm family centered school environment.

My Project

Being a first year teacher coming from the NYC Teaching Fellows my goal is to serve my students to the best of my abilities by securing these resources that will allow them to reach their reading goals. I envision the listening center along with the books and Cd's creating environment where students are excited to read. I see my students coming to school on time for the opportunity to sit at a listening center to not only read the book of their choice but get a chance to listen to the story as they read. This would be a great tool is promoting a love for reading. My students will be able to engage in reading groups as well as independent reading sessions. The reading center will make DEAR time more exciting for the students. The students will learn how to read, increase fluency skills, they will learn how to read with expression and they will be able to comprehend the material that they're reading or listening to.

The donations of this project will help improve student engagement in DEAR time.

It will improve how students approach learning how to read and learning a new reading skill. It will change the lives of my students by increasing their confidence in their abilities. Our students will become confident readers. Reading and reading comprehension skills are essential in reaching their academic goals in various subjects. Partnering with me to increase my student reading skills will have a huge impact.
