My Students

How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of student grades and school-wide data indicate that students with disabilities are the lowest performing sub-group at our inner-city, low income elementary school.

My classroom serves students with a range of disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, specific learning disabilities, and emotional disturbance.

They come to my classroom excited and ready to learn, but often they have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. The typical student in my class reads at a first grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. 100% of our students are African American or Latino and benefit from free lunch. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population and the student populations of more affluent areas of our school district.

My Project

My students are struggling readers and writers. They need high interest materials that will support their instruction in these areas. We love to play games in our classroom, and being able to provide them with games to support their learning will make everyone in our classroom happy.

My students need games and activities that focus on the alphabet, letter recognition, and writing, as well as reading comprehension to explore with at Learning Center time.

Our students will use these materials to explore their ability through building, drawing, making letters and sounds, words and reading! These activities will be used during Learning Center times throughout the day as we read and write while learning together. They will be able to use these manipulatives during our whole group and small group time, learning letters and sounds as they make words, numbers, and sets as we explore reading skills.

Your generous donation to our project will improve our K-5 classroom by building stronger readers and writers. This will change our students' lives for the better. They will love school and feel success at an early age --- having fun while learning!
