My Students

Crimes solved by math, secrets discovered by problem-solving, everyday items brought to light in another way - math is everywhere. I would like for my students to see that math is used everyday and in so many ways -- from solving crimes to cutting up apples into fractions.

My students live in a small rural area where they are not exposed to much variety.

Their homes do not usually have magazines, newspapers, etc., and I try to bring into the classroom as much exposure as possible. These books would give them another view of life, another way of looking at the world.

My Project

My students need exciting books about math for them to catch onto the excitement of math in the world. These books give us different ways to look at math. Some of the books will be used in the Intervention Math Club to reteach concepts. For instance, Crimes and Mathdemeanors is a book of crimes to solve in the school using math. Also, the 65 One Minute Problems is a fun way for students to use math to solve problems like a detective. There are also some lower reading level books such as Math Appeal and Math-terpieces by Greg Tang that are fun yet educational. Some of the books will cover some of the new TN math standards that have to cover the history of math, and some of the principle mathematicians of history.

Our math students will be impacted by these books in so many ways.

We will not only read about math in different formats but we will learn to converse and write about math too. When we talk and write math, it helps us to learn and retain better.
