Reading Resources Needed!

My students need reading resources to assist during our small group and center time. These resources will help target the reading skills that hinder their ability to read on grade level.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school located in Florida. 98% of our students are economically disadvantaged and qualify for free or reduced lunch. The majority of my students are struggling readers who are below grade level. Additionally, a large number of them are classified as ELL or English Language Learners; and a significant number of their parents are migrant workers who speak little or no English.

It is difficult to keep these struggling readers engaged during small group time.

Consequently, in an effort to differentiate instruction, I allow my students to participate in different center activities. These activities may call for independent or group work. Unfortunately, with the limited budget allotted for teacher supplies, it is difficult to purchase reading resources that are useful.

My Project

Based on an initial reading diagnostic assessment that was conducted at the beginning of the school year, I have divided my students into four reading groups for our small group sessions. The majority of my students are below grade level, and despite being in third grade, a significant number of them are reading on a first grade level.

Additionally, the materials will allow them to work independently, and keep them engaged while I work with students in small groups.

The audio books will assist my English Language Learners and auditory learners with fluency, as audio books help model good interpretative reading, intonation and expression. They also expose students to new vocabulary and introduces them to new genres they many not have considered.

The vocabulary and phonics activity centers help build foundational literacy skills that is needed in order for students to decode and encode words. These activities also help to promote fluency by building background knowledge and concepts necessary for reading comprehension.
