My Students

Do you remember circle time and being able to enjoy your favorite book in a space you loved? My students do not have this opportunity. Many of them sit at their chairs or stand to read books, because they would rather not sit on our dirty, stained rug that has been housed at our building forever.

New Citizen Center is an alternative program through the Worcester Public Schools.

We provide a warm welcome to Worcester Public Schools students in grades 3-12 who arrive from other countries with significant academic gaps. Our school goal is to teach English Language Learners not only the English language, but also academic and social skills, which will promote successful future academic and social endeavors in their home schools.

My Project

Our class is grades 3, 4, and 5. Many of the students have never been in school before. We do most of our work in small groups to help differentiate instruction. We use our rug for a majority of the day. We use it as a space to meet in small groups, access and read the books in our library, and to teach social skills at circle time. Having a new, clean rug will allow students to sit and gather in an inviting place.

The "Hands Around the World" rug will improve our classroom in many ways beyond just the appearance.

The rug will create discussions about where the students come from, nationality, and culture. But most importantly, it will help to spread our classroom message of world unity.
