This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students learn how to read by having fun! They love exploring phonics through different engaging learning centers.

My kindergarten students are from the West side of Chicago.

They are energetic little sponges that love to learn! My school is in a very impoverished area of the city and unfortunately, many of my students have challenging home-life situations and do not always come prepared to start kindergarten.

My Project

I believe one way I can help them get "ready to read" is by providing many fun and engaging opportunities through learning centers to explore phonics. With the Jolly Phonics hot dots materials, they will be able to read letter sound and word flashcards on their own. The hot dot pens speak and let the children know the correct sounds and words they are trying to read. They will be able to self-check their work and therefore, have a better understanding of the phonics concepts being taught in our whole group phonics lessons. The gigantic tub of silly putty is for my light table center. The students would have a lot of fun digging out glowing letter gems inside of the silly putty and making words.

There is a lot of pressure on my students to leave kindergarten reading and I want to give them every opportunity to be successful.

However, I want to make sure they love reading!!! Reading is fun! With these materials my students will enjoy their center work and learn how to read through play and exploration.
