My Students

My 7th grade middle school students are from urban, rural, and suburban areas. Our students filter into middle school from three schools. We spend some time getting to know each other so we can become a community of learners. I have language arts and social studies classes that have a wide-range of learners. Some students may be in our gifted program, learning support program, or life skills program. However, I find that all students enjoy using technology. Sharing technology and learning from each other helps us bond together as a class.

My Project

My students will benefit from having new books that they can take home and read such as Hi-Lo passages. We have a classroom library where students can sign out books to take with them. For example, the Orca collection of high-interest books is at an accessible level for my students will encourage them to read. Students are also encouraged to read with family members at home and get them engaged in reading. In our language arts classes, we use the Engage NY curriculum. Being able to read the books in full and take them home to read will also allow students to learn more outside of the classroom. Aligning to the Common Core has been a big stretch for students. Having some of the texts to read in and out of school will help students stretch their reading skills while providing quality reading material.
