My Students

I love to read and I am always trying to instill my love for reading in my students. However, many of them don't like to read because they find it very difficult. My goal is to teach and encourage them to love reading and allow it to open worlds they never thought were possible.

My school is a small, special education school serving students in grades K-8.

My students are 6th and 7th graders with behavior and learning disabilities. My students face challenges with academics and social/emotional issues because of their disabilities. However, they are eager to learn and want someone to care and give them a chance. Having a disability myself, I am visually impaired, I try to inspire my students to be the best they can be and show them that anything is possible if they put their minds and hearts into it. Most of my students are at least two grade levels below where they should be and struggle to catch up. They do very little reading at home either because it is not encouraged or there isn't anybody there to help them because their parents need to work just to make end meet. I believe with the right tools and people who care, my students can reach their potential.

My Project

My students need headsets, small computers, dictionaries and comfortable beanbag chairs to create a comfortable place to read. My two assistants and I want to set up a reading corner, called "Reading Paradise". Students will be able to go to Reading Paradise and sit on comfortable beanbag chairs and either use a computer or books to read in a quiet, comfortable, low-stakes place where they will want to practice reading to improve their skills. Students will be able to use the computers to listen to and record themselves reading. They will also be able to choose just-right books in a place where they will feel safe from embarrassment and begin to learn to love reading. The warm, comfortable atmosphere created by our Reading Paradise will hopefully encourage and create a love for reading.

I believe that by developing our "Reading Paradise", our students will learn to love reading while improving their reading skills.

The materials in this project will help my staff and I develop a warm, inviting and valuable learning environment to increase the reading levels of our students. By using both traditional and technological approaches to reading, we expect our students to achieve great successes in reading which will enrich their lives in many ways for years to come.
