My Students

Next year I will have 100 students - three separate groups. Every year these new-to-5th-grade kiddos enter my classroom with anticipation and a little fear. What's 5th grade going to be like? Is she a hard teacher? Can I read well enough to keep up?

I love these young fifth graders - always so eager and ready to work, but easily distracted by the butterflies - as a 10-year-old should be.

In my 35 years, I have found that a good book can pack more punch than any "butterfly".

My Project

I have found, year after year, that I can grab each and every child with a magical book: Gregor the Overlander.

High, average and reluctant readers thrive with the rich literature, fall into the page-turning plot, and angst with the well-developed characters of Gregor the Overlander.

Every time I read this book, not one of the students want to put the book down, and their reading skill soar.

Alas, my current set of Gregor the Overlander is falling apart - literally. I tried having the kids read the book on devices - but I could tell the engagement level just isn't the same as when their hands hold the pages of a book. Please help place this wonderful book into the hands of some rather fantastic 10-year-olds.
