My Students

I teach 2nd grade at a New York City Title I elementary school where all children qualify for free breakfast and lunch.

My classroom is a diverse population of students from a mosaic of cultures.

My challenge is to differentiate instruction to meet the learning needs of such a diverse family of students who are in language acquisition and basic learning modes.

With budgets being cut, I'm reaching out to donors for help. I need everything including basic supplies for all content areas.

My goal this year is to create a dynamic and warm 2nd grade family where all my students feel free to express themselves and feel pride in who they are. As I tap into the talents of my students, it's important for me to have the supplies they need to create and learn.

You can make a difference by giving my students a wonderful new avenue for expression.

My Project

This year I'm creating an ocean themed classroom reading nook where my students can relax and enjoy independent reading time. Sustained reading is a reading skill that needs to be taught to many of my students who each have different learning styles and behavior issues. I think that I can have better success if I can have a new beautiful and calming reading area with more compelling books about the wonders of the ocean and it's ecosystems.

I'm requesting an Apple iPad tablet, ocean decorations, and a variety of National Geographic ocean books for children including Sharks, Dolphins, and Ocean Worlds.

The books will be used by my students for independent reading times and small group instruction. They'll be housed in our new ocean reading nook. Right now we're studying ocean ecosystems and these National Geographic books have beautiful visuals and facts organized for children to easily understand. National Geographic books organize facts in an easy to understand format which is perfect for many of my students who struggle to read.

I'll use the ocean backdrop and decorations to create an "underwater" reading nook where fish hang from the ceiling and a coral reef backdrop puts my students into a world of coral and fish.

There are wonderful educational ocean apps for the iPad and I'll set up a learning center where students can use Google Earth to explore different seas and oceans.

I know that I can help my students dive into the oceans of the world and catch the waves of reading success! Thank you for helping me succeed!
