Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My class is a self contained special education classroom for students with significant learning needs.

A small library in the classroom would provide a supportive area for these special students to read books that they find interesting and are at their reading level.

The school library books are beyond the reading levels of this group of students.

The classroom library needs shelves for easy browsing, comfortable chairs and books at varying levels and subjects. As some of these students are English language learners, having fun bilingual books would be necessary to be fully inclusive.

My self contained classroom has different rotations including a rotation in our current class library. This area is set apart, but furnished with desks and one shelf that holds only 20 books. The desks are uncomfortable and the books are old and damaged. The environment does not encourage reading.

These special kids would greatly benefit from a comfortable well stocked library.

My goal is to encourage students to read; an important life skill. The ability to read will help them to grow and become more independent. Independence is key to their success beyond high school.
