My Students

Do you remember reading nonfiction text for the first time? Our students are beginning to read nonfiction text. This skill will help the students in their daily life.

I currently teach 7th and 8th grade special needs students in a high poverty area.

They are functioning on a first and second grade reading level. The students are in great need of learning how to read and comprehend nonfiction texts. These kits will assist them in comprehending various nonfiction texts such as train schedules,bus schedules, fliers, brochures and phone books. Due to our current economic crisis, our funding has been majorly cut. Unfortunately, the students who are most in need are the same ones who suffer the most from these budget cuts.

My Project

These nonfiction kits will offer the students the ability to learn a life skill. The kits have a wide variety of resources that the students can either use in small groups or independently. They will help the students gain the knowledge necessary to comprehend all types of nonfiction texts. Once these skills are mastered the students will be able to apply them to their daily life, now and in the future.

These kits will be used year after year to assist in their education.
