Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are classified as special education students. They are classified with different disabilities, most prominent being speech and language difficulty. My school receives students from the homeless shelter. The school also provide uniforms, food, and various other supplies to the students are housed in homeless shelters. My school's population is made up of 47% English Language Learners.

My students are low-level readers but have a great passion for books, a passion for learning, and they try really hard despite their disability.

The students in my class come from all cultures, such as Ghana, Puerto Rico, and American. My students smile every day and are eager to learn new things. They like to use the fine motor skills to create and construct things.

Despite my students’ disabilities, I push them hard to come close to grade level in the content area. I always tell my students, a disability is a condition, it doesn't define who you are. So, with that being said, I have high expectations for my students.

My Project

I am requesting a listening center for my students. Children take great pleasure in listening to stories. CD's that come with a copy of a book are particularly valuable and my students can follow along as the narrator reads. Many of my students are homeless and have limited access to hearing books through technology, because the affordability of technology is not obtainable. With the availability of the listening center, my students are to hear stories through technology. This promotes better engagement in hearing a story, which leads to a better comprehension of a story.

Hearing stories will provide my students with enriching their multi-sensory experience.

Hearing books on a cd will help my students see how the words on a page can come alive in a fluid, and expressive way. It will help them focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and will provide a model of fluent reading.

Audiobooks also help with fostering my students listening skills. The listening center will provide an opportunity for many of my students to listen to a favorite book at the same time, which can lead to a group discussion, the opportunity for playing creativity and acting out the parts of the story can be endless. As you can see, my students will benefit greatly from having a listening center in the classroom.
