My Students

Have you ever struggled to keep yourself organized? What if all you had to organize your things was a small blue chair, a table you shared with 5 other people, and a small white caddy, big enough to hold a few pencils? This is the problem that my students face everyday.

My kindergarten students attend a urban charter school which is very sparse with its supplies.

At the beginning of the year we are supplied with a hook for each child, four tables, and 25 student chairs. Just enough to have 25 students sit at their tables, yet nothing more. A teacher needs to teach students at the age of 5 a the foundations of not only academics, but organization and independence. This job is extremely trying when each child does not have a place for his or her own things.

My Project

At this point in time my students struggle to keep their things in their area (a 2 foot by 1 foot area of space on the top of their table) without mixing it up with their neighbor's belongings. When it comes to reading time, students are out of their seat back and forth to pick up a reader or two in their reading level. This causes commotion and the book carts are taking up much needed room in our tiny classroom! Having seat sacks and leveled readers in our classroom will not only give us the opportunity to get organized, but it will also give my students the chance to have books of their level and their immediate disposal! My students will learn to be more independent and they will also increase their silent reading skills.

With seat sacks, each and every child would have an opportunity to independently organize their own things, giving them the sense of independence.

Seat sacks would also give my students the opportunity to have leveled readers within arm's reach. Differentiated instruction at the snap of a finger! Not only would the students be organized, but with everything at their fingertips we would save much needed instructional time for more learning!
