My Students

I’ve been blessed with a teaching career surrounded by middle school students. Their energy and puppy-like awkwardness make for an exciting and interesting day that is always different from the next. In a sixth through eighth-grade middle school, my seventh-grade students are at a unique point in their academic careers. They have a year of experience, yet another year still full of wonder, giving them the perfect mixture of confidence and curiosity.

As a seventh grade ELA teacher, my classroom is the melting pot of readers and writers.

My students come from different learning backgrounds and have many unique learning styles; however, they are all seeking adventure and looking to escape the ordinary day-to-day. My students are on the hunt for awesome ideas, friends, role models, and inspiration to make life and school fascinating.

My Project

When you think of middle schoolers, you may envision snarky preteens who are glued to their phones and eyeroll at everything an adult says. Well, this thought isn't too far from the truth, but middle schoolers are so much more; they just need our guidance (shh, don't tell them that!). So what can be done to get them unplugged and connected with friends, family, and the world? Good books!

Research has shown that flooding students with great books is one of the best ways adults can support students in becoming avid readers.

In middle school, students are developing their identity and constantly need to try new things until they know what they like. Middle school classrooms NEED classroom libraries that are current and relevant to what middle schoolers find essential to help them fall in love with reading. By surrounding them with amazing literature, they will have easy access and endless opportunities to try out books and build reading momentum. "If you build it, they will come!"

The books in this project were carefully selected to meet the needs of 7th-grade readers, whether reluctant or not. Each novel is high-interest and supports a variety of identities and interests. Students will be given time in class to read and provided multiple opportunities to speak with friends and family about the books they choose.
