This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Teaching phonics systematically, explicitly, and cumulatively is key to successful reading instruction. Reading is not something that comes natural like speaking and language. Reading has to be taught. As adults, we can take that for granted. What seems easy such as letter recognition and sound recognition is foreign to young students.

Learning through hands on experiences is one of the most effective ways to gauge their learning.

As adults a dry erase marker is simply just that. For a 6yr old .... it is one of the most exciting tool for them to use. When given a dry erase marker, glue sticks and scissors they are excited to write, excited to follow directions, and ready to complete a task.

My goal is to keep that excitement while explicitly teaching letters and sounds by allowing my students to write on dry erase boards with the markers, cut and glue matching sounds. For a title 1 school with many migrant students dry erase makers, glue sticks and scissors are expensive tools.

As teachers, we continue to purchase tools when needed but having them in bulk and not worrying that we only have a few left would be a luxury.
