Reading Leads to Writing

My students need more inspiration to write. Their favorite author is Ralph Fletcher - he has given them so many great tips to include in their own writing, we love to have more books by him.

My Students

We are a small school in New York City with a diverse population. Our students come from all parts of the world, and in a lot of cases, English is their second language. As a result, words can sometimes be misunderstood. However, the rich cultural experiences that we share together as a class are priceless.

We are constantly looking for ways to enrich our learning environment creating special projects that embrace all levels of scholastic ability and interests.

We especially love STEM activities like robotics, computer coding, and 3-D modeling, but in addition, we also enjoy exploring specialty topics, such as the fine arts, foreign language, and the Debate Club. We try to make every day an exciting learning experience.

My Project

Back in 2013, I was lucky to have a project funded for Ralph Fletcher's "A Writer's Notebook". - over the past five years, 150 students have benefited from his words, and become increasingly better writers. This year, when my class finished reading "A Writer's Notebook", my students collectively groaned. Not because they were bored, but because they wanted to read more about writing. As one student wrote: "I really loved reading 'A Writer's Notebook'. It inspired me to write more, and use seed ideas. When we got to the last chapter, I was a little bit sad because I wanted to learn more about writing." It dawned on me that I should tap into this thirst for more tips by getting additional books about writing.

The books I have selected will help my students learn how to express themselves in any genre of writing - whether a factual report, a biographical essay, or a fictional story.

Students often believe that only famous authors can tell stories. They think that no one wants to read what they have to say. These child-friendly reference books on how to collect ideas and then use them in writing help students produce better writing pieces and gives them the confidence needed to share their writing with others. With this confidence my students will be able handle any writing project assigned to them. Such skills will be valuable throughout their school career and beyond.
