Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"To learn to read is to light a fire." -Victor Hugo. Allowing my students to reflect on what they read not only checks for their understanding of the material, but it also allows them to apply what they read to their daily lives, and to think of the possibilities that reading could open up for them.

My first graders are a mix of general education and special education students.

They love to read for enjoyment, which makes me very happy as an educator. I want them to learn to reflect on what they are reading in the hopes that they will become not only better readers but better thinkers.

My Project

My students will be using these reading response journals anytime they are reading a book. I want my students to be able to think about what they read, ask questions and relate what they read to the world, to themselves, or to another book that they have read. Using this journal as a vehicle will help them become better thinkers.

I'm hoping that when my students leave me at the end of the year, that the one gift I can give them would be the gift of loving books and loving to read them, "because a child who reads is an adult who thinks" (author unknown).

To teach students to read for enjoyment and to record their thoughts and questions is something that your donations will help make possible.
