This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance". This quote relates to my project because I want to encourage my students to become long-life readers. To accomplish this is to start building a classroom reading library.

Canoga Park high school is an urban school with a high transiency rate.

Most of my students come from a low income family and are primarily Title one recipients. Although they face social, emotional, and economic challenges, my students are hard workers and eager learners. Many of them understand that education is the key to have a better future. These past years we have suffered many budget cuts, and as a result my classroom is lacking many essential supplemental reading materials. Fostering the love for reading is very important because it opens many windows, and provides opportunities for them to gain knowledge and understanding of various cultures. By getting this support, it will benefit my students because it will provide them with the tools to identify themes, make predictions, anticipate events, learn new vocabulary and apply it, and explain the settings of the stories; most importantly it will awaken their interest in learning more about their cultural entity.

My Project

I am planning in incorporating 20 minutes of reading every day in my classroom. My students will be asked to take notes, write down words that are not familiar with, or answer questions based on what they read. By doing these activities, I will make students accountable for reading and they will improve their reading, writing skills and they will learn about their culture. By reading more, it will awake their interest in reading. My students will have the opportunity to learn more about the different myths, legends and fables from lost civilizations that once existed. Learning about them, it will teach my students about the history, their visions, believes and accomplishments. As for the some of the Spanish books for beginners, students will read short stories and answer question for comprehension, they will learn cognates and basic conjugations of the verbs. This activity will improve their comprehension of the language and will bust their communication skills in the target language.

This project will improve my classroom in a positive and very productive way because the students will have a variety of books to choose from, based on their interest or level of understanding.

It will change their lives because it will give them a better understanding of their culture. These books will expand their vocabulary and improve their spelling, and will help my students to communicate better in the target language.
