Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend an urban high school. It is the most diverse high school in the state. So far this year, we have moved back to in person learning, but recently switched to remote. My 8th and 10th grade students are missing access to our shool library and my classroom library. Most of my students come from literacy poor homes as well.

My students do not have easy access to quality literature.

They need access to high interest independent reading books. Most of my students come from homes with no books. They also avoid using the library because of the fear of losing books and having to pay to replace them or pay overdue fines.

My Project

The pandemic and distance learning have greatly affected my students and their overall wellbeing and mental health. Students are staring at screens more than ever. I believe that given the right books, they'll put the screens down if only for a short time.

Reading can greatly reduce stress and anxiety and build empathy.

All of these are important for the world they are living in right now. They need books! They need "windows" to learn about people and places unlike them. They need "mirrors" to read about people and places that remind them of home.
